Volunteers For Peace, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 in Belmont, Vermont, USA. VFP promotes International Voluntary Service as an effective means of intercultural education and community service. We provide projects where people from diverse backgrounds can work together to help overcome the need, violence and environmental decay facing our planet. We coordinate annual USA service projects and medium-term and long-term volunteer placement. The minimum age for 2008 projects is 18 and the camp language is English.

VFP 01-08 NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA 20-Jun to 26-Jun FAMILY CAMP 10 VOLS
SIERRA FRIENDS CENTER is a residential educational institution focusing on peace, social justice and sustainable living, under the care of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Family work camp is a time to work alongside others who believe in the possibility of a peaceful, creative world.
WORK: Play music, clear brush, learn folk dances, pick blackberries, put on new roofs, swim in the Yuba River, dig in the garden, create delicious meals, paint buildings and look at the spectacular night sky.
LOCATION: Nevada City, California, 1 1/2-hour East of Sacramento.
TERMINAL: Sacramento, CA.
ACCOMODATION: Shared cabins, central bathhouse, and excellent organic vegetarian meals in our dining hall.

VFP 02-08 TINMOUTH, VERMONT 01-Jul to 16-Jul FEST/AGRI 18+ 10 VOLS
SOLARFEST is a weekend-long arts festival that is powered entirely by renewable energy. Vols will help prepare the site (a working horse farm and bed-and-breakfast).
WORK: will include pasture clean up, removing fencing, grading roadways, clearing brush, setting up and beautifying the site, and clean up for two days after the festival. Study and recreation opportunities with the greater SolarFest community. Vols will make many new friends and have ample opportunity to interact while working for a common, fun, worthwhile endeavor. VFP vols should count on simply enjoying the festival weekend. An informal study part will be organized on the topic of climate change and communities.
STUDY THEME: Global climate change and communities
LOCATION: Tinmouth, Vermont is a very small, rural town. It is beautiful but remote.
TERMINAL: Bus/train to Rutland, Vermont.
ACCOMODATION: a nearby rustic house and cabin with pond and amenities. Great food is prepared with rotating vol help; no curfew but we work farm hours.

VFP 03-08 LITTLE EAGLE, SOUTH DAKOTA 01-Jul to 22-Jul AGRI/MANU 18+ 10 VOLS
SITTING BULL SCHOOL (K-8) at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, Little Eagle, South Dakota is managed by a local community board, which serves a small number of Hunkpapa Lakota children from the village. The VFP project will focus on the development of an 1800 "Lakota Living Village". Part of the rich heritage admired around the world is how the Lakota people organized their daily life that produced a dynamic warrior society. Nowhere on this reservation is there a place that venerates this aspect of Sitting Bull's people.
WORK: The work will entail preparing a river bottom location that is 300 to 600 yards from the School as the site of an actual Lakota village. Grass must be cut, grounds cleaned, trees cleared, tipi poles acquired and prepared, fence lines put up, and lodge or tipi preparation.

THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER (CEDC) is a non-profit social service organization. CEDC provides individuals with information about educational job training and available job opportunities in the community.
WORK: Vols will work on renovation of CEDC building to house the local & international volunteers; training local community residents in computer technology and providing information about employment and job training opportunities; annual renovation of a church school for K - 12th grade students.
LOCATION: Philadelphia is the birthplace of the USA, and has more than 100 nationalities living here peacefully and productively. The city has the largest inland port and the largest urban park in the world.
TERMINAL: Philadelphia.
ACCOMODATION: Bed, showers and a kitchen are provided.

SPECIAL REMARKS: We welcome people from all walks of life, with any variety of interests and background. However, individuals with alcohol or drug addiction problems are not welcome. Painting, carpentry and roofing skills would be of great help, but are not required.
VFP 05-08 CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE 5-Jul to 19-Jul PEACE/ARTS/KIDS 18-30 12 VOLS
4TH ANNUAL CONCORD PEACE CAMP.
WORK: Vols will work with American vols from local schools, churches and organizations on numerous community projects over the course of the two weeks. These projects will include working side by side with counselors at the Audubon Society's Childrens Summer Day Camp. Activities involve assisting with outdoor adventures, games, crafts, stories and environmental education in a beautiful forest setting. In addition, the International Volunteers will work with American volunteers conducting landscape and maintenance work at the Unitarian Universalist Church where the international volunteers will be housed.
STUDY THEME: Peace in the tradition of Gandhi and Martin Luther King and also by living, working and enjoying cultural and outdoor activities as one cohesive group.
LOCATION: Concord, New Hampshire, the state capital but has the feel of a small New England town.
TERMINAL: Boston, MA or Manchester NH then bus to Concord, New Hampshire.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: New Hampshire artists will conduct evening workshops on peace poetry, drumming and songs in an attempt to open dialogue around peace related issues. A full cultural itinerary includes hiking, yoga, swimming and more.
ACCOMODATION: In the community rooms of the Unitarian Universalist church.

VFP 06-08 EAST MONTPELIER, VERMONT 05-Jul to 20-Jul AGRI/MANU 18+ 10 VOLS
ORCHARD VALLEY WALDORF SCHOOL is a nursery through grade 8 school located on 55 acres on the beautiful Kingsbury Branch of the Winooski River in East Montpelier, Vermont, approximately 13 miles from Montpelier, Vermont’s capital. One of the distinctive qualities of the school is a commitment to sustainability.
WORK: Our work will involve the care, maintenance and improvement of the existing orchard, gardens and chicken coop, the creation of a low impact camp with composting toilet, solar shower and trails; cleaning, painting and organizing the school buildings, and the completion of an authentic Native American Wigwam. Please bring appropriate clothing and footwear.
STUDY THEME: guidance and instruction in biodynamic and sustainable growing and building practices.
LOCATION: East Montpelier is 20 minutes drive from Montpelier Vermont, 1 hour from Burlington Vermont, 3 hours from Boston or Montreal.
TERMINAL: Montpelier Vermont, both Greyhound bus station and Amtrak train station, Burlington Vermont, bus train and airport.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: The River and surrounding area offer regular swimming, canoeing and water recreation.
ACCOMODATION: Two classrooms of the Grades school building which look out over the rolling property toward nearby mountains will be converted into dormitory space. The school building also has bathrooms and a kitchen where volunteers will prepare their own meals. Temporary outdoor showers will be assembled for the volunteers for bathing.
LANGUAGE: English is the common language, though we have French, Spanish and German speaking members of the community and we appreciate diversity.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Absolutely no alcohol or smoking on school grounds.
VFP 07-08 JEFFERSON, OREGON 06-Jul to 21-Jul FEST/MANU 18+ 10 VOLS
The JEFFERSON, OREGON Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this work program in a beautiful town settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with nearby lakes and streams, population 2,700.
WORK: Assisting other local volunteers in the various tasks coordinating an annual community festival featuring music, food and at the 2008 Jefferson Mint Festival. Volunteers will help prepare festival grounds, music stage, booths, and other tasks as needed. The festival includes two nights of live music from local bands, daytime stage performances, car show, parade and more. Also community park landscaping and repair, and Santiam River bank cleanup.
LOCATION: Jefferson, Oregon on the Santiam River.
TERMINAL: Portland or Eugene Oregon.
ACCOMODATION: shared rooms in a historic farmhouse or church parsonage. Towels and laundry provided. Plan on bringing a lightweight sleeping bag.
LANGUAGE: English language skills are necessary.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Project is recommended for physically fit individuals accustomed working outdoors. English language skills are necessary. Participants must be willing to work as team members in an outdoor setting and are responsible for paying for free time activities and meals.
VFP 08-08 STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA 07-Jul to 21-Jul RENO/MANU 18+ 12 VOLS
FIRST UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF STOCKTON hosts. St. Mary’s Interfaith Community Services has served the homeless and working poor in Stockton since 1955. Its many free services include hot meals, a dental clinic, and a school.
WORK: Volunteers will assist with numerous renovation and landscaping projects on the property.
LOCATION: Stockton is a city of 260,000 located in central inland California. Stockton is ethnically and economically very diverse. Summer weather is very hot and dry, with cooler evenings. Stockton is located about 2 hours by car from San Francisco, the Pacific Ocean, and the Sierra mountains.
TERMINAL: Stockton, CA: Greyhound Bus station or Amtrak station. Please do not arrive at night.
ACCOMODATION: In the religious education building of First UU Church. The church is conveniently located near shops, bus stops, and a university. Volunteers will be provided with a kitchen, bathrooms, and simple sleeping mats. Volunteers will rotate shopping, cooking, and cleaning duties. Weekend homestays with local families will be provided. Possible day trip to ocean or mountains.
LANGUAGE: English will be the common language of the project.

VFP 09-08 VERSHIRE, VERMONT 07-Jul to 28-Jul ARTS/KIDS 18+ 8 VOLS
This project is sponsored by VERSHARE, a community organization dedicated to improving life in the village of Vershire, Vermont. Vols will work with local adults & teens to lead programs for children ages 5-13 in a community-based summer day camp.
WORK: includes performing arts (theater, music, dance, puppetry), visual arts (weaving, nature crafts, painting), nature study (water life, forest mammals) and outdoor adventure (kayaking, hiking, and rock-climbing). Many of the children come from poor families and some suffer from emotional and behavioral problems. We are looking for creative vols who love children and are willing to teach activities from their home country, such as games, songs, and dance.
LOCATION: Vershire, a very small town of 600 people spread out over 100 square kilometers in central Vermont. There are no shops or restaurants in town, but the scenery is beautiful and the people are friendly and welcoming.
TERMINAL: fly to Burlington, VT, Boston, Montreal or NY, bus to White River Junction, VT.
ACCOMODATION: Vols will be housed in an historic house in Vershire village.
LANGUAGE: Must speak English WELL!

VFP 10-08 HORTON, KANSAS 09-Jul to 23-Jul HERI/YOUTH 18+ 15 VOLS
WORK: THE KICKAPOO BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB will provide an opportunity for volunteers to enjoy cultural exchange with children ages 5-20 years old. Volunteers will provide presentations of their own home culture, and will participate in some of the daily programs of the club that build character, encourage education and career exploration, healthy living through sports and fitness and the appreciation of the arts. Vols may be able to attend the Annual Kickapoo Pow-Wow, museums, pool parties, and many more fun filled events planned during this culture exchange.
LOCATION: The Kickapoo Reservation in Kansas is located in Northeast Kansas. We are one of four Native American Tribes in Kansas.
TERMINAL: Kansas City International Airport, Kansas City, Missouri – 60 miles from Horton. Transportation to and from the airport will be provided.
ACCOMODATION: Volunteers will stay at the 14,000 sq. ft. facility of the Kickapoo Boys and Girls Club. Our Club has a kitchen area, computer labs, exercise/fitness equipment, gymnasium, game room, art room, and education room.

HOUSING WORKS, the largest provider of services to the homeless with AIDS/HIV in New York offers an opportunity to develop your skills. Our three Adult Day Health Care program sites are dedicated to providing quality health care services including primary care and mental health services to adults infected/affected with HIV/AIDS. The health care services include care coordination/case management, complementary therapies, social services, mental health, nutrition, substance use, and primary care services. We are looking for hard working volunteers, with appropriate qualifications, interest, and/or experience in public health, social service, gerontology, nutrition or other medical or care giving background to perform health care related activities.
WORK: During program hours, volunteers will co-facilitate health care groups, co-lead recreation trips in the community, escort clients to medical and other health care related appointments, and if necessary, perform administrative tasks.
ACCOMODATIONS: Volunteers will be housed together in our Brooklyn residence. We furnish cots, bedding, towels, shower facilities and laundry. Food and transportation provided.

VFP 12-08 MONTPELIER, VERMONT 13-Jul to 02-Aug ENVI/CONS 18+ 10 VOLS
13th annual workcamp with the MONTPELIER PARKS DEPARTMENT.
WORK: Vols will be working on a variety of park improvement projects, including building and restoring trails for hikers, cross-country skiers. The projects have not all been finalized but may also include planting trees along the riverbanks in the city and possibly building a few stone benches for riverside seating. There may be some opportunity to do some general park maintenance such as mowing lawns and restoring drainage ditches.
LOCATION: Montpelier is the capitol of Vermont with a population of 8500, making it the smallest capitol in the U.S.
TERMINAL: Montpelier, Vermont.
ACCOMODATION: In the Christ Church with shared cooking duties. Smoking and alcohol are not allowed in the Church. Accommodation in the church is not available until 13-July. LEISURE ACTIVITIES: During free time vols will have access to local parks and recreation areas. There will be time for interaction with the local community so please bring information about your country, hobbies, and life to share.

This project, hosted by the GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB, is for vols who are experienced at camping with no running water or electricity. Vols must be able to carry a 40 - 60 pound (18-27kg) backpack several miles (a few kilometers.) Join with local volunteers to build a piece of the Appalachian Trail, a wilderness footpath that runs 2000 miles through the mountains of the eastern U.S.
Work: All Sessions are working on handicapped accessible trail boardwalk and treadway. You will get muddy! Learn trail building skills.
Location: Danby is 2 hours east of Albany, New York in southern Vermont. Terminal: Danby is accessed via Rutland Vermont that is served by Greyhound Bus from New York City, Albany, New York, Boston, Massachusetts and Burlington, Vermont.
Accommodation: Monday - Thursday nights at a primitive campsite in the mountains. Spend the days off at a base camp in town. Tents are provided.
Leisure Activities: Explore Vermont swimming holes, historic villages, and forested mountains.
Special Requests: Volunteers must arrive in Danby on their first Sunday for orientation. Bring hiking boots, backpack, sleeping bag (rated to 20 F/ -6 C) and sturdy work clothes. Work is physically demanding and is done outside in all weather. Applicants should plan to arrive in Rutland on the Sunday at the beginning of the session, and depart Rutland on the Saturday at the end of the session.
VFP 14-08 CAPE NEDDICK, MAINE 21-Jul to 04-Aug AGRI/KIDS 18+ 10 VOLS
Vols will work at the Youth Enrichment Center at HILTON-WINN FARM, a historic property providing educational farm experiences to children. The goal is to foster communication, tolerance and self-esteem through nature and agricultural activities, and to help children gain an understanding of our relationship to nature.
WORK: Vols will be assigned tasks ranging from outdoor manual work (gardening, animal care, barn work, farm work, trail upkeep) to work with kids on outdoor group activities.
STUDY THEME: Nature, Farming, Children, Environment.
LOCATION: Cape Neddick, Maine.
TERMINAL: Airport Boston (BOS), Massachusetts. Bus to Wells, Maine.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Recreation activities might include stargazing, night hikes, ocean visits and barbeques.
ACCOMODATION: Within the farmhouse - beds and linens supplied.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Vols should be motivated to work vigorously outdoors and love working with children. Absolutely no smoking or drinking alcohol at Center.
VFP 15-08 NEWPORT, NEW HAMPSHIRE26-Jul to 09-Aug EDU/HERI 18+ 10 VOLS
WORK: Teaching and Community Interaction.
The NEWPORT SCHOOL DISTRICT and the NEWPORT REVITALIZATION COMMITTEE host this project jointly. The primary project will be working withNewport youth who willearn academic credit in Social Studies by learning about volunteers' homelands and preparing a multi-media presentationfor the community. Vols will be expanding the world vision of rural NH youth. Mornings will be semi-formal instruction with use of computer laboratory; afternoons will be cultural with cooking, games, music, etc. There will be several opportunities to in experience the beauty of New Hampshire’s lakes and mountains plus one all-day field trip to the mountains or a historical site with the students.
STUDY THEME: World Vision.
LOCATION: The organizers are experienced workcamp hosts in rural western New Hampshire, town population 6000.
TERMINAL: Concord, NH. (Bus terminal easily reached by express bus from Boston.)

VFP 16-08 CATSKILLS, NEW YORK 30-Jul to 05-Aug DISA 21-35 12 VOLS
SPROUT is dedicated to helping individuals with developmental disabilities and mental retardation to grow through challenging and safe travel experiences.
WORK: Vols will co-lead small groups of adults with special needs on a 3-day weekend getaway to celebrate Sprout’s SPROUTSTOCK Music Festival in Upstate New York. Responsibilities include ensuring safety, providing emotional and physical support, enhancing fun, budgeting, and overall enjoyment for your group 24 hours a day. Vols must be willing to assist with all Adult Daily Living skills (brushing teeth, separating dirty clothes, showering etc). This is very challenging work, yet also very rewarding and fun. Experience working with this population is an asset but not required. Training will be provided.
LOCATION: Meeting and Training in NYC on project start date; transportation provided to and from project location. Sproutstock held at small resort in Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.
TERMINAL: JFK International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
ACCOMODATION: During the trip, you will stay in a hotel. Before and after the trip, you will stay at a youth hostel in NYC wherevolunteers will be responsible for their own meals, transportation and activities.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Minimal free time in NYC.

WORK: COMMON GROUND CENTER is a multi-age, arts, education and outdoor recreation center dedicated to bringing together and strengthening diverse families and communities. Our programs inspire life-long learning and lasting relationships through a camp experience grounded on respect, inclusion, and cooperation. We are expanding our camp so that more families, including those affected by illness, economic hardship and disability, can enjoy summer camp. Volunteers will be involved in construction projects like building a raft, a lifeguard chair and other items for our new two-acre pond. There will also be other, small carpentry projects including porch chairs, tables and groundwork. Volunteers will be included in camp activities such as the arts, music, swimming and hiking, and they will be asked to do a short presentation on an aspect of their culture.

CROSS VERMONT TRAIL ASSOCIATION Work: The work is hard, heavy physical labor. Much of it will be digging ditches with shovels and carrying stone gravel in wheelbarrows. We will work a few long (7 hr) days then take a day off for fun, and then work a few days and take another day off. Why are we working so hard? We are building a bike path that will eventually go 85 miles across the entire state of Vermont. The path will connect small towns, their schools, and the wild natural areas in between.
STUDY THEME: Guest speakers from the VT chapter of the Nature Conservancy re. local plants and animals.
LOCATION: Public Forest in Northeastern Vermont, east of Montpelier
TERMINAL: Burlington or Montpelier, Vermont. Pick-up may be arranged.
ACCOMODATION: We will camp in tents in the forest. The camp has no electricity, no running water, and no flushing toilets. We will be able to take showers only twice during the camp. No alcohol is allowed at the housing. We cook food together. Group gear (tents, cooking utensils) provided. You bring sleeping bag and personal items.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: During recreation time we will decide as a group - riding bikes, hiking up mountains, swimming in lakes; and also driving to attractions in nearby towns like Montpelier, capitol of Vermont.

SPROUT is dedicated to helping individuals with developmental disabilities and mental retardation to grow through challenging and safe travel experiences.
WORK: Vols will co-lead small groups of adults with special needs on a 5-day resort trip in Upstate New York. Responsibilities include ensuring safety, providing emotional and physical support, enhancing fun, budgeting, and overall enjoyment for your group 24 hours a day. Vols must be willing to assist with all Adult Daily Living skills (brushing teeth, separating dirty clothes, showering etc). This is very challenging work, yet also very rewarding and fun. Experience working with this population is an asset but not required. Training will be provided.
LOCATION: Meeting and Training in NYC on project start date, transportation provided to and from project location atsmall resort hotel in Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.
ACCOMODATION: During the trip, you will stay in a hotel. Before and after the trip, you will stay at a youth hostel in NYC where volunteers will be responsible for their own meals, transportation and activities.

WORK: Come to the beautiful seacoast of southern Maine and the WELLS NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE. Your work will include improving wildlife habitat and trail work at the Reserve and often painting and maintenance projects on our historic buildings. This entails getting dirty and working hard. You may also help with projects for partner conservation organizations. Your major project will be helping prepare for and staff a large Nature Crafts Festival fund-raising event. Work involves set up and take-down, assist other volunteers and staff with food, parking, recycling, and many other jobs. Educational programs are available to volunteers. The Reserve has a private beach and many nature trails.

LOCATION: Wells is 1/2 hour south of Portland, Maine and 1/2 hour north of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The 1600–acre research and education reserve includes beach, coastal marsh, scenic uplands, historic farm buildings, and is a sanctuary for endangered plants and wildlife.

Rutland DISMAS HOUSE provides a transitional drug, alcohol and violence free housing opportunity to men and women getting out of prison so they can successfully reconcile with the community before living independently.
WORK: A good deal of computer and office work, participation in various components of fundraising activities, student recruitment, representing Dismas at speaking engagements on college campuses and at civic organizations, working with clothing and food donations and participating in house group activities. Volunteers will visit prisons with the Co-Directors and will have an opportunity to observe the interview screening process. The average daily work commitment expected is 5-6 hours per day, however the hours are varied and non-traditional, and may include some weekends and evenings. As a resident of the house, volunteers will live as an equal to and with the same expectations as the former prisoner residents: Absolutely NO alcohol or drug use permitted during the stay; presence at the evening meal Monday through Friday is required, as is presence at the weekly house meeting one evening during the week; no smoking inside the house; no intimate relationships between residents permitted.

SIERRA FRIENDS CENTER is a residential educational institution focusing on peace, social justice and sustainable living, under the care of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Family work camp is a time to work alongside others who believe in the possibility of a peaceful, creative world.
WORK: The Woolman Semester is looking for a new Kitchen Intern. This person will experience the gamut of food production and preparation, from our organic garden to our lively dining hall.
LOCATION: Our site is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and offers 230 acres of meadows, woods, streams and ponds. Our rustic cabins are nestled among pines and oaks, and provide an inspirational and tranquil setting. The site is 7 miles west of historic Nevada City in the heart of gold country. Hiking along and swimming in the Yuba River are popular pastimes among locals and tourists. The local area offers museums, historic parks, theater, and music festivals (The Annual Bluegrass Festival, and the Nevada City Bicycle Classic coincide with work camp.)
ACCOMMODATIONS: There are 3 alternatives for housing: 5 bed cabins (central bathhouse), 2 bed cabins (central bathhouse), and shared rooms (2 per room) in a house. Volunteers may choose the housing they are most comfortable with upon arrival. Volunteers must bring their own bedding – sleeping bag or bedroll, and towels. Sierra Friends Center can provide pillows and extra blankets, if needed.
