This will be achieved through our activities and by our Global Network.
Purpose:JIA was established in August 2004 to root work camps in China and to set up a work camp global network
Activities:Campers (volunteers) from the local community always organize camps with volunteers from foreign countries (their counterparts). JIA assists of the coordination of work camps by:
-collecting and sharing information about work camps in China
-training the campers (volunteers)
-connecting a work camp global network
The Meaning of J.I.A.:JIA stands for “Joy In Action”. We believe that all of the volunteers who participate in our activities or cooperate with us will discover joy in their work. JIA means “family”; “family hood”; and “family tie” in Chinese. So we hope world will become one family by work camps.
Fields of Work:JIA work camps focus on villages in China that have been affected by Hansen’s Disease(HD). In partnership with the residents of the villages, campers work to improve the villagers’ overall living ans spiritual conditions.
In 2007, we began setting work camps in a School.
In 2008, we will set more work camps in other fields, such as environmental issues, the handicapped, cultural heritages, education and so on.

International Work camp by JIA2.1. IntroductionWe welcome you to join our work camps,
sharing unforgettable time and creating fresh new age together! All campsites have
nice nature, multiple culture, various minorities and tasty local snacks, so you will enjoy
peaceful life and
encounter the simple villagers of China. Maybe it will be a
rare chance for you to know this
mysterious country with long history. The common points of all work camps are such as follows:How to apply:How to apply and join the projects!?
A: Applying through the partners!!Volunteers have to apply not directly to us, but through our partner Workcamp Organizations (WOs) of their own countries unless you live in China or in countries that have no partners. In this exceptional case, they need to send the application form to JIA. You can find partner WOs on the NVDA website
(www.nvda-asiapacific.org)B: How much should volunteers pay?Volunteers have to pay the travel cost to/ from workcamps & the following registration & participation fee to JIA
while food and accommodation during the projects are provided by JIA*The above is for the volunteers from the developed countries, and for the volunteers from the developing countries, the fee they need to pay will be as much as the local volunteers’. If the volunteers want to join by groups, small discount will be considered.C: The detailed information of the projectBy
1-2 months before the projects, volunteers will receive “Information Sheets” (details of the project, what to bring, the meeting point, how to get there, etc.) together with “Acceptance Letter” and “JIA Volunteer Guide”, through the partner organizations.
D: Book the flights as soon as being accepted! Please Don’t wait for the Information Sheets, otherwise you may
miss economical flights! All workcamps in China, we will pick volunteers up from the
airport, railway station or
long- distance bus station. So, we advise volunteers to
arrive / leave China at least a few days before/ after the projects also because volunteers should not expect so much sightseeing during the projects.(if you want to do it, please do it
before/ after the workcamps!)
And it is quite possible to stay in the
Youth Hostel, guest house, travelers’ hotel etc.(4-10 US$ per night) together with volunteers in the same workcamps before/ after the workcamps and we
Chinese are very
hospitable to foreigners; you can get a chance to do the
home-stay!
Why not? If you want they will accept u kindly and be your guide to travel around to enjoy the marvelous scenic sights and experience the diversified culture of the ethnic groups (For the details, wait for the info sheets!)

Date: 15.Jul.-28.Jul.Bai Teng Keng Primary school lies in a mountainous area. There are 107 students in this school, most of whom are orphans or children who are left in the care of their grandparents. Most of them never stepped out of the village. Many of the children here have no chance to receive family education since their parents go to the city to work for a living. Up till then we have been hold twice 4days mini camp during the National Day in 2007 and winter days in 2008 which organized by the local Chaoshan Regional committee volunteers
·

So during the work camp we will organize some campers to visit the students’ home , in this way we are able to establish the files of students.

Date: 29.Jul-11.Aug.The school consists of the junior high school and the primary school with 700-800 students in total. As the school is far away from their home, most of the students have to live in school. Most residents support themselves through agricultural work, and many of the town's youth choose to leave and find work as manual laborers elsewhere in order to earn a living. As some parents leave home to find a job in the another province, some pupils just grow up with their grand parents .Most parents hope that their children begin working as manual laborers as soon as possible in order to earn money and help support the family. For the Health environment, students of Gan Ziping School do not even have access to the most basic need of drinking water. The school basically does not boil the water for students to drink. Students often drink water directly from the tap. We hope to influence the kids there through our action, and the kids will impact on their own family, finally the family would influence the whole community about the idea of public health and even education issues.
Work:· Education plays a vital part in the developments of children, especially teenagers. Our analysis what we should help for the pupils this camp are the students about 80 students. We teach English course to light up their enthusiasm for the studying and Public Health knowledge to influence their public health habits for the rest of their lives.
· Meanwhile the volunteers will build the water boiler for the school to strengthen the health awareness.
· According to their different interest, we play basket ball /have handiwork course / dance / sing etc. with the teenagers to achieve peer education.

Date: 22.Jul.-4.Aug. Xinzhong elementary school is built on a mountain in 2002, so the temperature changes a lot from day to night. The school is covered by fog for almost 6 months in the winter and spring days every year. There are about 140 students aged from about 5 to 14 in Xin Zhong school, most of them are Miao minority, There are 8 teachers. Leprosy (Hansen’s disease)x affected VillageSome knowledge of Hansen’s disease(HD) and HDx affected village you should know before join the workcamp: (Hansen’s disease)x affected Villages in ChinaWhat JIA calls HD (leprosy)x affected Villages are isolated villages based around HD hospitals built by the government, mainly in the 1960s. When MDT (multi-drug therapy) became available in China in the 1980s, the medical functions of HD hospitals gradually diminished. However, due to past and continued discrimination against HD Recovered people, the domiciles constructed around the hospitals remain in use. There are more than 600 HD Recovered villages in China housing over 40,000 people (the Health Ministry reports 21,000). Many people who have been cured of HD are still stigmatized and not welcome in their home villages. According to a report by the Chinese Health Ministry, “The disease has now been officially eradicated in China, but the villages remain partly because the patients were unable to rebuild their lives after being institutionalized for decades.” Many villagers farm animals and crops for a living. However, as many of them are over 60 years old and have severe disabilities, villagers struggle to farm. Some villagers have children or even grandchildren who are healthy (leprosy is not hereditary) and can help them farm. Sadly, stigma and poverty often prevent these children from having a real chance to get an education. Otherwise, villagers struggle to survive on meager government subsidies of between zero and 380 RMB (50 USD) per month. In May 2007, the National Development and Reform Commission of the Health Ministry pledged 276 million RMB ($35.9 million) to renovate the impoverished conditions of the nation’s HD Recovered Villages. The government not only plans to improve the infrastructure (houses, medical equipment, etc.) but also plans to merge existing villages.
About Hansen’s Disease
i. NatureHansen’s Disease (HD) is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium Leprae. HD mainly affects the peripheral nerves, the skin, and the mucous membranes. Formerly known as leprosy, the name ‘Hansen’s Disease’ honors Dr. Armauer Hansen, who discovered the bacterium in 1873.
ii. Difficult to infect and easy to curable Before scientists developed effective medicines to cure HD, many countries quarantined HD patients in isolated areas. In 1981, scientists developed a highly effective multi-drug treatment (MDT) regimen that has since been used to cure the disease. The disease usually takes between 6-12 months to cure. Early detection and treatment is essential in preventing permanent damage. Hansen’s disease is not highly contagious.95% of people have natural immunity to HD. Even for the unfortunate 5%, HD is still difficult to contract as it is transmitted by direct, repetitive contact over a prolonged period of time.
We aim not just to improve their living condition, but also eliminate the discrimination toward HD through our action! Please see the further information of the HD-recovered village workcamps as follow:
JIA-GD0807-SGZ (CONS•TEACH)
Date:12.Jul.– 25.JulSome of the aged HD recovered villagers have their children and also grandchildren in Shigangzhang Village. At present, there are over 100 villagers there, 16 of those are kids or teenagers. Since most of the villagers’ old house haven’t been rebuilt for ages, the roofs of those are to some extent erodes by the termites or leaking. The First work camp in Shigangzhang was organized by the Chinese and Peace camp(Korea) in 2003, from that days, the Zhanjiang regional committee volunteers have hold work camp for 7 times in the every summer and winter holidays, we built Toilets/Kitchens /Repair Roof/Pave the wall ,etc. in these 5 years.

Teaching: They have seldom chance to see the outside world. Added the misunderstand on HD, they were called as” The progeny of HD affected people”, it make them live under a shadow, some of them even too shameful to go to school. They are so enthusiastic about the new things, like music or performance. Let them expose to some interesting extracurricular stuff to make their life more colorful.
·
