Dear partners,
It is a great pleasure for us to present our programme of work camps for the summer 2008.
The work done by each partner has been remarkable and responsibly. We would like to thank you for everything, and encourage you to persevere in the noble mission for which we are committed.
The projects contained in the following pages are relative to the coming work camp season. We hope that your volunteers will find some interesting projects that grab to their attention and that they wish to contribute to the development of Togo.
This year we have chosen twenty areas because of the many requests from local communities and already, we can say that the participation of various volunteers contribute to the expectations of the people. As always the spirit of sharing and communion will be there for mutual enrichment on how to leave in some society.
Good season of every one of us and see you soon.
Cordially
The Executive Director
TODZRO MensahWho are we?“Les Amis de la Terre Togo” is a Togolese non governmental organisation of voluntary action, working with the aim to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in social, economic and ecological matters. The Organisation is created on the 20th of June 1990. We are member of Friends of the Earth International FoEI, IUCN, CCIVS, partner of the Alliance and accredited to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).
We work in the fields of reforestation, renewable energies, organic farming, sustainable fishery, garbage treatment and desertification. Furthermore, we conduct educational and health projects, as protection of the environment is only possible when accompanied by social and economic progress.
Since 1992, Les Amis de la Terre’s workcamps and activities have gradually increased and diversified. We actually work in partnership with about 10 workcamps organisms of several countries.
In addition of fulfilling these goals mentioned above, the objectives of the international exchanges program are to incite social involvement and encourage intercultural communication and understanding between people from different countries and cultures.
Relevant information about our work is available on our website
www.amiterre.tg in French at the moment.
Our objectives The overall objective of “Les Amis de la Terre Togo” is to improve the living conditions of people, with the golden rule backup and restoration of the environment in the context of sustainable development.
Our specific objectives are as follows:
- Stimulate the personal growth and development of people;
- Encourage international contact and understanding;
- Carry out social and environmental work;
- Promote volunteering;
- create a real awareness of environmental issues among policy makers and the general public;
- Create or support initiatives for the preservation and restoration of the environment;
- Supplying the villages with drinking water through the promotion of simple and inexpensive techniques;
- promoting sustainable agriculture with the youth and women in rural areas;
- Promoting decentralized cooperation through exchanges
- Stimulate individual and collective development
- Encourage cultural mixing and international cooperation
- Promote Volunteerism
About volunteers’ workcamps“Les Amis de la Terre Togo” has been organising volunteers’ workcamps since 1992. Our volunteers’ workcamps take place each summer, with participants from Togo, West Africa and Europe. Groups of 12 to 20 young people conduct projects such as reforestation of small terrains, the construction of small schools, wells and water tanks, as well as educational campaigns concerning environmental and health issues.
Each year, les Amis de la Terre organizes between 8 and 10 international workcamps. The duration of these projects is usually 3 weeks and they take place mainly from June to September.
Each group gathers 12 to 20 volunteers and 2 group leaders.
Our main partners are the French organisations Solidarité Jeunesse, Concordia, “Jeunesse et reconstruction”, UNAREC, Service Civil International (SCI), as well as “Compagnons Batisseurs” and JAVVA of Belgium and SETEM of Spain.
Work in workcampsThe volunteers work an average of 30 hours a week. Work is usually manual: environmental protection, construction, renovation, heritage etc. No particular skills are required.
Loging, food and leasure? - Loging and food are provided by “Les Amis de la Terre Togo” and are absolutely free for the participants. Normally the participants will prepare their own meals, the food and cooking facilities are provided by our organisation.
- In most cases, the participants will stay within families in the village where the volunteers’ work camp takes place. Basic sanitary facilities are always available, but European standard should not be expected. Togo is a Third-World-Country. For the first days before and last days after the volunteers’ workcamp, free accommodation for the participants is available in Lomé.
- A small budget for leisure activities is given to the group during the workcamp. The accommodation is variable: cottage, little house, community centre and sometimes classrooms.
Cultural ActivitiesThe afternoon is dedicated to giving volunteers an inter-cultural learning experience, with a focus on showing the international volunteers Togolese culture. This will involve interaction with the local people.
What about the educational approach?“Les Amis de la Terre Togo” promotes participatory and democratic management and as an approach to encourage volunteers to take responsibilities and become self reliant through experimentation, success and partnership. The volunteers have to be involved in the camp life and take responsibilities such as planning of the work, work schedule, organization of activities, etc. The group manages the budget together, with the support of the group leaders. Contact and activities with the local community are strongly favored.
Age limitOur projects are open to volunteers between 18 to 30 years old but exceptions for older volunteers are possible.
Camp languagesThe languages on international work camps are both English and French
Group leadersThere are 2 group leaders on each project. Their role is to encourage the volunteers to take initiatives and responsibilities. They are resource persons and make sure that the workcamp runs smoothly. The presence of a technical "expert" is the responsibility of our organization.
InsuranceLes Amis de la Terre does not provide any insurance for volunteers during the workcamp. The volunteers MUST get a valid medical insurance for the duration of their stay in Togo.
VisaAll Europeans need a visa. Volunteers should get it in Togolese Embassy or at the airport of Lomé in Togo on arrival.
Money and banksThe currency of Togo is the CFA franc. CFA has a fixed value of 655.957 for one Euro. Traveler’s checks can be exchanged in some banks in Lomé.
How to contact us?If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact any of us.

How glad shall we be to welcome your volunteers!!!Summary of things that your volunteers need to knowParticipating in a workcamp in a developing country is a different experience from that of Europe. That is why it is necessary for the camps in developing countries, to possess certain necessary information for the preparation of the trip.
- Valid passport, Visa, Travel Insurance, Vaccines, Anti-Malaria, personale pharmacy box…
- Participation fees: 190 €;
- Volunteers have to inform our organization about the day, time and hour of arrival at the international airport of Lomé;
- Volunteers can be picked up from the international airport of Lomé to the apartment booked for them;
- Every international work camp’s team is composed of 12 to 20 volunteers who work 30 hours per week (Monday to Friday);
- Age limit: 18 - 30 years old but exceptions for older volunteers are possible;
- The languages spoken on our work camps are English and French
- Every day the group organizes home duty teams, so that everybody can participate in the cleaning, tidying up and preparation of the meals;
- Every work camp has two (2) leaders. They just advice volunteers, suggest various ideas and activities. They are a link between the different actors of the work camp: Les Amis de la Terre, the project sponsor, the local population and the volunteers.
- In all Camps volunteers should bring: sleeping bag, a mat, and old clothes for the works, walking shoes, torch and batteries.
NB: What the volunteers must have to know1- Volunteers must communicate on time their flight schedules (arrival time in Togo) to allow the association to delegate one member to pick them up at the airport to an apartment reserved for volunteers.
They should never follow someone who is not from our association and they do not know. Insist identification of friendly compared to the association (Order of mission, badges or membership card) to avoid a scam because there are thugs at the airport offering their assistance
2- The volunteers are supported only from the date the camp starts.
3- The languages used on the camps are French and English
4- We inform volunteers who smoke that the use of drugs is strictly prohibited in Togo and therefore on the camps.
Any offender will ensure he/her responsibilities towards the police.
5- Volunteers can bring school supplies, books for schoolchildren of the host villages for equipment and libraries. You can also bring sensitization material on STDs and AIDS
6- For sharing experiences, we expect volunteers to write a report about their stay with its various aspects both positive and negative. It is an essential tool, but also a priceless resource for all volunteers.
