0804CON - Construction and Clay house building- 13/04/08-26/04/08 15 vols CONS
Project: Naikoy is a small, nice village in Phattalung (Southern Thailand). DaLaa organized several camps here, because also with our short term workcamps we are looking for continuation in the projects. We cooperate with the Agriculture Group of Naikoy. This group of local people promotes agriculture in a natural way (so-called: King’s Project). For example: they make their own compost without chemicals, several projects for animal protection and water protection. They also want to make more people aware of the importance of biological farming. They organize workshops and meetings. There is so much interest in the workshops that their meeting place is becoming too small. This (smaller) place will become the learning centre and for the meetings they want to build a bigger place.
DaLaa has also a Long Term House in Naikoy. Long Term volunteers also want to organize activities outside the school. Together we decided to build a simple place where Agriculture meetings and Long Term activities can take place. We will build a (simple) place out of clay (a natural way of building). You will learn how to make the clay, the construction and how to build with it.
Accomodation: we will stay together in a local house.
Fee: 6,500 Baht (about 140 Euro)
Location: Naikoy village is situated in Phattalung Province, Southern part of Thailand.
0805NAT- Nature and Environment-18/05/08-31/05/08 15vols ENVI
Project: This project we are doing together with the group of people in Khao Phra area. This group takes care of the forest, saving the water. They also have a learning centre for those activities. For example: they plant small, young trees, they make Shampoo by natural plants and so on. They would like volunteers to help them running some of their activities because they don’t have much time to do all of activities. Besides taking part in this group, they also have their own regular jobs to do. The volunteers and the villagers will work together to make a trail in the forest. This way it will be more convenient for visitors to come, follow the trail and learn about nature on the way. Planting small trees will also be one of the activities during this camp. As well as making signs (boards with information). DaLaa wants to support this group by helping them with some activities. Our involvement will give them more spirit to continue this important and environmental work. Especially ‘big’ activities (as making the trail) will take a lot of time of the local group. More hands make work easier! Getting more awareness about the environment is very important in Thailand.
Accomodation: we will stay together in a local house.
Fee: 6,500 Baht (about 140 Euro)
Location: KaoPra village is in Rattaphum district, Songkhla Province, Southern part of Thailand.
0806TEA- Creative Teaching and handicraft- 15/6/08-28/6/08 10 Vols TEAC
Creative English Teaching & Handicraft
Project: NongTong is a small and nice Muslim village. DaLaa organized several camps here. Also with our STC we want to have continuation in the projects. So, every year we go back to NongTong. In the school are about 600-700 students and 12 teachers. It’s from kindergarten until secondary school. We will teach the kids from age 10 – 15 years old. The level of English is very basic. You will also visit other classes and play games, sing a song. In the morning you will teach for 2 hours. Then we will have lunch at the school. In the afternoon we will do activities with the children. If you have special activities in your country, it is nice to learn this to the kids (for example origami by Japanese volunteers, a special game from your country, et cetera). You will also learn about local handicraft (batik) together with the students.
Accomodation: we will stay together in a classroom of the school or in DaLaa Long Term House.
Fee: 6,500 Baht (about 140 Euro)
Location: NongTong village is situated in Phattalung Province, Southern part of Thailand.
0807TEA- Creative Teaching English- 13/07/08-26/07/08- 10vols TEAC
Project: Tachang is a small village where DaLaa started the first STC in 2004. Every year we go back there for 1 or 2 STCs. You will teach in Tachang school. This is a small and poor school (7 teachers and 80 students from kindergarten to grade 6). Most Thai schools want foreigners to teach English at their school. For Thai children English language is really difficult: the alphabet and the pronunciation are completely different compared with Thai language. You will experience this yourself during our Thai lessons!! This big difference is one of the reasons that Thai children loose interest in learning English. Something most of them regret when they get older. With our projects we don't want to teach like most of the teachers. First we want the children to enjoy the classes, show them that it can also be fun to learn English. That's why we want to make a combination between learning and creativity. How? That will be up to you and the other volunteers. Let's share our ideas and make a nice program together. The level of English is very basic.
Accomodation: live together in the school or in a Thai house with Thai Work Camp leader.
Fee: 6,500 Baht (about 140 Euro)
Location: Tachang village is about 15 km. North of Hat Yai, in the South of Thailand.
LMTV/ Long &Middle Term Volunteer Project (1-12 months)
General info about English Teaching in Thailand and our projects
Our teaching projects are in primary or secondary schools in small villages. The knowledge of English is poor. Most Thai schools want foreigners to teach English at their school. They don’t have the money to hire a foreign teacher. DaLaa helps them by sending international volunteers who can help the school for a period of time. It’s our aim to continue these projects in cooperation with the schools: give structural help.
For Thai children English language is really difficult: the alphabet and the pronunciation are completely different compared with Thai language. You will experience this yourself during your Thai lessons!! This big difference is one of the reasons that Thai children loose interest in learning English. Something most of them regret when they get older. With our projects we want the children to enjoy the classes, show them that it can also be fun to learn English. For example by making lessons in combination with creativity (games and songs).
Projects: In our Middle and Long Term Projects we try to make a combination between English Teaching and another subject. We do this for 2 reasons:
1.If you are not used to it, the whole day teaching is very exhausting (especially for Western volunteers who are not used to the weather).
2.Besides experiencing the school, the children, the teachers, it is also nice to experience another part of daily life in Thailand. In the villages many people earn their living with agriculture. By working together in agriculture projects you will also get to know some of the villagers.

The DaLaa Member Club Center (DMCC) is in Hat Yai. This is our office and meeting place. Our neighbor is teacher at a local school just outside Hat Yai. This is a secondary school with about 300 kids (12-16). They like to have foreigners helping to teach English. When our neighbor started to know DaLaa, she asked if we could also help her school. They are very happy with our international volunteers who come to help them!
This means that you will teach during the week days at the school, together with the local teacher.
In the evenings/weekends we hope you still have energy to help DaLaa? We are making a lot of information material (brochures/ cards / magazine), it would be nice if you want to help us with this. Also every afternoon a group of children visit the DMCC for playing games.

General condition for participation:
EYES will apply the standard formats, procedures and principals of work of the CCIVS and NVDA Inter-Regional Exchange procedures and the Alliance Guidelines. Please help us in organizing better quality projects by sending us your comments and those of your volunteers.
The basic timetable on our camps is about 30-35 hours of work per week, generally from Monday to Friday, but the necessities of the project can bring the volunteers to work some more (rarely less).
The common languages of the workcamps will be English and Filipino/Tagalog (or Cebuano in Olango). We encourage volunteers to learn a bit of basic Tagalog before arrival (please refer to our info sheets and info pack for more information and basic lexicon).
In most of the projects, daily timetable and tasks, free time and global organization will be decided in common, facilitated by the coordinator following the needs of the project and managed in teams. We expect on each workcamp to create a really strong team of volunteers, for the benefit of the project and the local community.
There will always be at least one Filipino coordinator per camp and for the whole duration of the project and the volunteers will have an emergency number active 24/24 – 7/7 to call in case of major problems.
EYES will do its best to support the volunteers and to facilitate constructive and educational experiences. However, our projects are organized according to the Filipino standards of living and culture and the volunteers will need to adapt to simple living conditions and local food.
We expect the sending organizations to systematically provide the volunteers with our documentation (workcamp program, workcamp infosheet and infopack) and at least introduce International Voluntary Service fundamental principles. We recommend holding pre-departure trainings for your participants and introduce the basis of Intercultural learning and cultural diversity, non violent communication, problem solving, conflict management, and active participation to a voluntary service project. The philosophy of voluntarism is the base of our work here and we expect your volunteer to understand, share and participate to it actively. Volunteers should be informed by their sending organization before departure and are requested to read our documents to find out more about the do’s and do not’s of Filipino culture.
All the projects presented in this brochure are international projects. We try to reach a maximum cultural diversity and gender balance in the composition of our groups but you might find more than 2 volunteers from the same country in the same project.
All our projects are open to volunteer who are 18 years old when the workcamp starts. We have no maximum limit and we encourage the participation of “grown up” volunteers in order to increase the intergenerational dimension of our projects and exchanges.
The volunteers are expected to attend the whole duration of the project and any delays in the arrival or departure MUST be officially justified and announced in advance. The incoming officer and the camp leader will keep the right to cancel the inscription of a volunteer or not accept her/him on the camp for any unjustified or not announced delay superior to 24 hours after the arrival day. Late arrivals may complicate the arrangement of the travel to the project site. Please inform your participants that personal plans (touristic visits) should be only foreseen before or after the workcamp.
All the volunteers are required to individually subscribe a private insurance for the whole duration of the project, covering third party liability, health care and repatriation. A proof of payment and description of subscribed services will be systematically required at the beginning of the camp by our camp leader. No exception will be allowed as we cannot accept on our workcamps a participant without proper insurance for legal reasons.
Our only way to organise workcamps (so far) is to require the participants to directly contribute to the expenses of their projects and participate to the overall running costs of the organisation. Each project might have different participation fees, as we adapt it to the reality of the costs we have to cover for the project and the volunteers. Conscious of the burden it represents for your volunteers we do our best to keep it as low as possible and aim at self-finance the projects at mid-term level. We unfortunately have to keep it this year as we still can't count on any sufficient support from outsent volunteers, local, regional, national powers and institutions or ethical private funding to cover our yearly budget and expenses of the projects. Please inform very clearly your volunteers before they leave for the Philippines about this fact and the reason why we require their help to keep on organising all year long quality programmes. Make also clear that the inscription fee you require as sending organisation is not sent to the hosting organisation, as we know how much conflict-making this overall topic can be on a workcamp.
The extra fee covers:
Orientation meeting and cultural introduction on arrival
Administration fee
Transportation to/from the meeting point to/from project site
Accommodation and food during the project (including scheduled activities)
Activities as scheduled during the project for the group
Evaluation meeting
English speaking Workcamp coordinator for the whole duration of the project
Emergency number 24/24 – 7/7
Access to material that could be useful for your project
The extra fee does not cover:
Travel (medical) and cancellation insurance
Air transportation, departure taxes, or ticketing fees
Extra leisure activities outside the program
Changes in the project, once the placement has been confirmed (unless in very special cases)

Free from disturbance, Taishi is rich in marine resource such as oyster and shells. For seafood lovers, this is definitely a heaven. However, with the industry transformation, the economic structure in Taishi are facing challenges, population drain resulting from unemployment deepens the rural-urban divide. Besides, a large number of local residents are married to mail-order wife due to the poor social/economical status, and the amount keeps increasing in recent years. Because of the scarcity and unequal distributions of resource, children have limited access to education, especially English learning environment. Confronted with the conflicting situations, the community people still lack of understating toward their own culture and social values. Therefore, through the workcamp held in Taish, we wish to promote global understanding, trigger the learning interests of children and enhance their capacity of English through in-depth interactions between local residents and cross-national youths. Empowering the young generation to think globally, act locally, we introduce Taishi to the world with a brand new perspective.
The aims of the camp are 1) To support the Hong-En and to create learning-friendly atmosphere for the children there; 2) To add new tourism attractions in Taishi town through global and local voluntary power; 3) To promote friendship/understanding/solidarity among local people and cross-national vols.
4) To ground a firm foundation and extend development of international workcamps all over Taiwan.
